Tedx Talk – How Can We Separate Better?

Every year, at least 11,000 men in the UK are actively suicidal because of family breakdown, but many in the midst of a divorce are left with no support before, during or after the process. How can we provide systems in the UK to ensure couples in the process of divorce get the support they need during it? How can we ensure these systems are fair to both parties, but also for any children involved? In this personal and moving talk, Professor Ben Hine talks about his own experience of being a child of divorce and how this has impacted him from a young age through to now as an adult. He talks about his research into an app to help parents co-parent children after a family breakdown, and what framework can be put in place to help those going through divorce. Professor Ben Hine achieved his BSc and PhD in 2010, studying gender-typing of prosocial behaviour. Since joining the University of West London in 2014, he’s focused on applied gender and forensic psychology. His research addresses gender dynamics in the criminal justice system and post-separation abuse, notably parental alienation. Ben leads EBDARN, serves as a trustee for The Mankind Initiative, and chairs the Male Psychology Section of the British Psychological Society. A co-founder of the Men and Boys coalition, he’s set to release a guide on men’s issues in 2024. Ben actively participates in various advocacy groups, including the parental alienation study group and the international men and families alliance.
