Domestic Violence & Abuse (DVA) and Intimate Partner Violence (IPV)

Mapping the Landscape of Domestic Violence in the U.K. The Evidence-Based Domestic Abuse Research Network (EBDARN)
Led by Ben Hine (UWL), in collaboration with Dr Elizabeth Bates (University of Cumbria), Prof Nicola Graham-Kevan (University of Central Lancashire), & Dr Jenny Mackay (Nottingham Trent University) & the charity Safelives

– Ongoing analysis of large data sets (~65,000) detailing domestic violence cases reported to services nationwide, with particular focus on comparing the experiences and outcomes of male vs. female victim-survivors, and ‘hidden groups’ (i.e., LGBT+)

Identifying and understanding the needs of male and LGBT+ survivors of domestic abuse in safe accommodation
with Dr Liz Bates (University of Cumbria)

– Investigation of the experiences and needs of male and LGBT+ survivors of domestic violence and abuse in seeking safe accommodation
– Interviews and discussions to be held with both survivors and supporting organisations

Identifying factors predictive of domestic violence and abuse (DVA) perpetration: secondary analysis of national data from perpetrator programmes in England and Wales
with Prof Nicola Graham-Kevan (University of Central Lancashire), & Prof Thomas Baguley and Dr Jenny Mackay (Nottingham Trent University)

– Analysis of largest UK dataset on DVA perpetrators who have engaged with programmes in the last three years (2018-2021) to provide a comprehensive insight into a) the factors predictive of DVA perpetration and b) service needs.

Rape Myths and the Criminal Justice System

Virtual Reality Technology in Policing
With Dr Anthony Murphy (University of Birmingham), Dr Sameer Kishore (Middlesex University Dubai), Dr Tomas McDowell (UWL), Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC), Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) and others

– New project starting in March 2022 in collaboration with the above bodies among others (London Victim’s Commissioner, Survivors Trust etc.) to explore the efficacy of virtual reality technology in training police officers dealing with rape cases.

With Lucy Clarke (PhD Student, UWL) and Dr Dawn England (Middlesex University Dubai)

– Following successful examination of princess behaviour and perception thereof, a series of studies exploring the perception of prince characters and masculinity is underway, including engagement with Marvel and Star Wars franchises.
